Today marks the 28th anniversary of the the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). VAWA created programs, funding, and resources for survivors of sexual and domestic violence. This act was the first time intimate partner violence was recognized as a criminal offense, and called for members of the community to work together to prevent and address these crimes.
VAWA has been reauthorized several times since 1994, including March of this year. The 2022 reauthorization of VAWA strengthens this landmark law.

Tribal Courts
In the past, tribal courts could do little against non-Native perpetrators that had committed crimes outlined by VAWA. The 2022 re-authorization of the act has expanded its reach to be able to prosecute non-Native perpetrators in tribal courts.
